The Budget announcement on October 30th brought changes to the taxation of double cab pickup vehicles. These multi use vehicles, traditionally classified as commercial vehicles, will now be treated as company cars for tax purposes.
What Does This Mean for Businesses?
This reclassification will lead to an increase in Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax for drivers of double cab pickups. This change is expected to have a significant impact on businesses across the UK, particularly those that rely on double cab pickups for operational needs.
The previous government attempted to implement a similar change back in February 2024, however strong opposition from the automotive industry led them to reverse the decision. The current government has decided to put the original motion back into place.
Why the Change?
The government's reasoning for this change is to address what they class as a 'grey area' where double cab pickups are increasingly being used for both personal and business use. By treating these vehicles as company cars, they aim to ensure that they are taxed appropriately and fairly across the board.
To diminish the immediate effect of this change, the government has introduced a transitional period. For those who buy, lease, or order a double cab pickup before April 2025 - the previous tax rules will apply until the earlier of disposal, lease expiry, or April 2029.
TCH Leasing have a wide range of double cabbed pickup trucks from a list of reputable manufacturers, that if ordered prior to April 2025, will enjoy the lower rates of Benefit-in-Kind tax.
