Plan Ahead: Avoid Festive Gridlock on UK Roads This Christmas

Busy Motorway at Christmastime

As the festive season approaches, millions of drivers across the UK are preparing to hit the road to visit friends and family. Before you set off, it’s worth noting that both the AA and RAC are warning motorists to expect record-breaking levels of traffic in the run-up to Christmas 2025.

According to recent surveys, this year’s Christmas getaway is shaping up to be the busiest on record, with millions of drivers expected to travel between December 19 and December 25. The AA predicts Friday, December 19 will see the highest volume, with 72% of drivers on the road – around 24.4 million cars. Other peak days include Saturday, December 20 (70%, 23.7 million cars) and Tuesday, December 23 (71%, 24 million cars). Even Christmas Eve is expected to be busy, with 67% of drivers travelling – over 22.7 million cars.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you’re planning a festive journey, timing is everything. Leaving during peak periods could mean sitting in hours of congestion, increasing stress and fuel costs. Instead:

  • Travel early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the worst delays.
  • Consider alternative routes and check live traffic updates before setting off.
  • Plan for safety and convenience – ensure your vehicle is serviced and ready for winter conditions.
