First Plug-In Hybrid Supermini to be Launched: BYD Dolphin G

BYD is set to broaden its range with the introduction of the Dolphin G DM-i, a new plug-in hybrid supermini designed for modern drivers.

Arriving this autumn, the Dolphin G DM-i is expected to make history as the first plug-in hybrid in its class, offering a compelling alternative to traditional small cars. Key competitors are likely to include popular models such as the MG3 Hybrid, Renault Clio and Vauxhall Corsa.

The new model is based on the fully electric Dolphin Surf and will sit alongside it in BYD’s growing line-up, giving customers the choice between all-electric and hybrid power.

While full technical details have yet to be confirmed, the Dolphin G DM-i is widely expected to use BYD’s established plug-in hybrid system, potentially pairing a 1.5-litre petrol engine with electric power. The brand has already confirmed an impressive combined driving range of up to 621 miles, making it a practical option for both daily commutes and longer journeys.

Stella Li, BYD executive vice president, said: “The European B-segment is one of the most important parts of the market, and with Dolphin G DM-i, we want to redefine what customers can expect from a compact car in the electric era. By bringing long electric range, intelligent hybrid technology and advanced digital features into an accessible compact vehicle, we are making sustainable mobility smarter, more practical and available to many more people across Europe.”
